From relatively modest beginnings, R. J. launched the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, which would eventually develop two hugely profitable products, Prince Albert pipe tobacco and Camel cigarettes. His marriage in 1905 to Katharine Smith, a dynamic woman thirty years his junior, marked the beginning of a unique partnership that went well beyond the family. As a couple, the Reynoldses conducted a far-ranging social life and, under Katharine's direction, built Reynolda House, a breathtaking estate and model farm. Providing leadership to a series of progressive reform movements and business innovations, they helped drive one of the South's best examples of rapid urbanization and changing race relations in the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Together they became one of the New South's most influential elite couples. Upon R. J.'s death, Katharine reinvented herself, marrying a World War I veteran many years her junior and engaging in a significant new set of philanthropic pursuits.

Katharine and R. J. Reynolds reveals the broad economic, social, cultural, and political changes that were the backdrop to the Reynoldses' lives. An Insider's Perspective

For anyone interested in the South, modern Southern culture, feminism and racism in the new (post Civil War) South, the history of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the impact of industrialism on the early twentieth century South, this book is a must read. Before this reviewer proceeds, he must make two disclaimers: first, I am an RJR man having worked for the company nearly 20 years of my professional life; second, I know Dr. Gillespie personally and have an inordinate (unrestrained) respect for her research, teaching and writing having been a recipient of the fruits thereof. So, I admit a bias; but,I feel that my opinion is sufficiently buttressed by the limpid quality of the written expression and thoroughness of the research that created this book. It's an enjoyable read. The characters come alive on the pages. Their hopes and dreams, both dashed and realized, are presented for all the see. For a Winstonian, the names and places of our community come alive with a history that few of us know. For the student of the new South, the partnership of Katharine and Richard, a pair of equals according to RJR, seeks to achieve a a company and community that would not have existed without these two remarkable people. In Dr. Gillespies's newest book, Winston-Salem becomes a microcosm for a South that has come of age in the past 40 years. Great history of Katharine and r.j.

Since visiting reynolda house I have been obsessed with the history of the Reynolds family. This book gives a very complete history of Katharine and R.J.'s lives. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the start of Reynolds tobacco,the Reynolds family or reynolda house.

The book is well written, however, it has the feel of a text book and it is not difficult to speculate that it will be required reading for a history class or college level class discussing the timing and cultural significance of the era.

"Interior Castle" Provides Blueprint to the Soul

Teresa of Avila was a Carmelite nun living in the 1500s who wrote the "Interior Castle" (known as "The Mansions" in her native Spain) at the request of her confessor. A mystic who communed intimately with God, she had experienced a vision of "a most beautiful crystal globe, made in the shape of a castle, and containing seven mansions, in the seventh and innermost of which was the King of Glory, in the greatest splendour, illuming and beautifying them all. . . outside the palace limits everything was foul, dark, and infested with toads, vipers and other venomous creatures." This castle became Teresa's metaphor for the soul. "Interior Castle" explores each of the seven mansions in great detail. Her intended audience were the sisters who made up her cloistered religious community, however her insights offer much to the world at large.

Teresa wrote reluctantly and felt that she had little to offer that had not already been said. She believed that "Our Lord will be granting me a great favour if a single one of these nuns should find that my words help her to praise Him a little better." She focuses on the beauty of the soul and laments that we spend so much attention on our physical body and so little on the divine spark that is within.

Teresa focuses on gaining self-knowledge, but not in the way we in the 21st century interpret that term. For her, self-knowledge means coming to know the soul within. It means understanding our dependence on God and gaining humility by acknowledging that we are nothing without Him. The route to self-knowledge and entry into the interior castle comes through prayer and meditation. As one progresses through the mansions, one comes to know and long for God more and more and to reject the world and its attractions. Teresa encourages the beginner in prayer "to labour and be resolute and prepare himself with all possible diligence to bring his will into conforming with the will of God." She also offers encouragement: "If, then, you sometimes fall, do not lose heart or cease striving to make progress, for even out of your fall God will bring good."

As one makes her way ever deeper into the heart of the castle, increased spiritual consolations and trials become par for the course. Many (perhaps even most) do not reach the most inner mansions in this lifetime. Teresa is quick to point out, however, that "the Lord gives when He wills and as He wills and to whom He wills, and as the gifts are His own, this is doing no injustice to anyone." Indeed she cautions her readers to never believe that they deserve any gift that the Lord bestows upon them, nor should we set out to obtain any consolations or mystical experiences because "the most essential thing is that we should love God without any motive of self-interest."

Teresa was truly granted amazing gifts of insight and experience from God. While we may not share in her experience, "Interior Castle" offers a unique perspective into the divine within each of us. It offers a portrait of our souls and invites us into a deeper relationship with God.

This is a classic of spiritual literature.

Interior Castle, by St. Teresa of Avila, is one of the saint's writings that is filled with spiritual insight, charm, and breathtaking closeness to God. Her castle is the God within, and there are outward mansions that must be penetrated to get to this inner treasure. Each mansion is a deepening of one's knowledge of God, and a step further away from one's capture by externality and the world. She describes these inward steps, and leads one onward to union with God (or God carries one onward - at first it is our efforts, than it is God's). Beautiful and illuminating.

superior spiritual writing for the mystically oriented.

Not all are mystics like Teresa of Avila, nor are all intellectuals like Thomas Aquinas. One is not superior to the other. This writing is for the mystic. Her writing and aided by the translation of E. Allison Peers, is so conversational and written in a down to earth and highly accessible language style. Not written in ivory tower scholarly dialogue, but it is, at the same time, quite lofty.

Sr. Teresa is a tour guide through the mansions of prayer with the utmost reverence for our Lord, obedience, and charity for the faith. She gives practical insights to scripture, and how to know what is really from God, and what is from the deceiver. I loved it, and found it highly comforting. I couldn't put it down and took so many notes that I've referred back to. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Ken Bruen (b. 1951) is one of the most prominent Irish crime writers of the last two decades. He has two long-running series: one starring a disgraced former policeman named Jack Taylor, the other a London police detective named Inspector Brant. Praised for their sharp insight into the darker side of today’s prosperous Ireland, Bruen’s novels are marked by grim atmosphere and clipped prose. Among the best known are his White Trilogy (1998–2000) and The Guards (2001), the Shamus award–winning first novel in the Jack Taylor series. Along with his wife and daughter, Bruen lives and works in Galway. Reed Farrel Coleman (b. 1956) is a mystery author best known for creating the Moe Prager series. Under his own name and the pen name Tony Spinosa, he has published fourteen novels, beginning with Life Goes Sleeping (1991), which introduced the three-volume Dylan Klein series. In 2001, Coleman published Walking the Perfect Square, a gritty story about Moe Prager, a retired New York cop who becomes embroiled in the hunt for a missing college student. Since then, he has written six more novels starring Prager, most recently Hurt Machine (2011). Coleman has won three Shamus awards in the best detective novel category, and has been nominated twice for Edgar awards. His short fiction has been published widely, most recently in the collection Long Island Noir (2012). Coleman lives with his family on Long Island, where he teaches writing classes at Hofstra University.

A Masterpiece in the Crime Fiction Genre

TOWER is the book I had been waiting for all year. Ken Bruen is the Irish dark angel who, for the past several years, has carved a new and distinctive niche into the crime fiction genre. And Reed Farrel Coleman is a writer's writer, a master of noir crime fiction whose name is on the must-read list of all who have cracked the binding of one of his books. The news of a collaboration between the two men meant that the end result could be nothing less than an unforgettable, nightmarish journey to the dark end of a dangerous street. And that is precisely what it is.

TOWER is roughly divided into two sections covering the same period of time from the points of view of two childhood friends whose paths memorably and irrevocably cross and join as adults. Todd is a small-change hood working for Boyle, a mid-level Irish mobster with tentacles of influence throughout the East Coast to Ireland and beyond. Nick is the son of an Irish cop forced into an early retirement and working as a security guard. He doesn't fall under the sway of the evil of bad companions so much as he rushes to embrace them. Indeed, as his mother says, "he's got the bad drop."

When Todd brings Nick into Murphy's sphere of influence, Nick begins to thrive. But neither Todd nor Nick is entirely what the other believes him to be. Todd, especially, is holding a secret that will change the lives and relationship of both men when Murphy discovers it and forces Todd to make an untenable and impossible choice.

Matters are further complicated by the women with whom each of the men are involved. Nick meets Shannon by happenstance, a love at first sight circumstance that develops slowly and ends abruptly when his life gets in the way. Todd is thrown together with a woman named Leeza. Their attraction develops slowly; each of them knows exactly who and what the other is, and it is this knowledge that leads to both the consummation and termination of their relationship.

At the same time, federal law enforcement is ready to destroy Murphy's syndicate, with Nick and Todd being caught between the mob and the law. As the point of view of each man is presented, an apparent contradiction is resolved, and it appears that both men will ultimately escape intact with a promise of happiness or something like it. The conclusion is somewhat enigmatic, at least at first blush. When the full impact of what has occurred sets in, however, the climax is as chilling as anything you will read this year (or any year).

TOWER fulfills every promise made by the concept of this dream collaboration. Bruen and Coleman collaborate like twin sides of the same brain, making the difficult look easy --- and unforgettable, to boot. Dark, violent, frightening and touching, TOWER stands as a masterpiece in the crime fiction genre.

Excellent collaboration

Ken Bruen is one of my favorite authors, and though I don't know anything about his collaborator, I knew I had to read this book because of my prior experience with Mr. Bruen's work. I am very happy that I did, as this book is simply excellent!

The plot concerns two friends, one Jewish and the other Irish. Mr. Bruen writes the part of the book about the Irish fellow and his co-author does the same for the Jewish gentleman. The different parts of the story intermesh very well, and you get one perspective on what is happening, and then the other.

There's a lot of foul language and gory violence, as usual, but they only move the plot forward. I don't like to talk abouit plot details bercause that would only spoil the fun of reading for others. One thing I will say, though: at the end I finally realized the significance of the book's title, because it was a puzzle to me almost all the way through. Read this book for yourself and enjoy some of the best gritty crime fiction being written today!

Tower by Ken Bruen and Reed Farrel Coleman is a dark and violent tale of friendship, family, betrayal, love and loss. The tale told by the two main characters Nick (Bruen) and Todd (Coleman) packs more twists, turns and violence into 136 pages than most authors do in books twice the size.
The two authors have written a novel that blends together flawlessly the two stories of Nick and Todd. With a plot that moves along at breakneck speed, fascinating characters and an ending that you won't soon forget this is a must read story that will stay with you for a long, long time.

About the Author
Thomas Berger (1924–2014) was the bestselling author of novels, short stories, and plays, including the Old West classic Little Big Man (1964) and the Pulitzer Prize–nominated novel The Feud (1983). Berger was born in Cincinnati and served with a medical unit in World War II, an experience that provided the inspiration for his first novel, Crazy in Berlin (1958). Berger found widespread success with his third novel, Little Big Man, and maintained a steady output of critically acclaimed work since then. Several of his novels have been adapted into film, including a celebrated version of Little Big Man. His short fiction has appeared in Harper’s Magazine, Esquire, and Playboy. Berger lived in New York.

Mr. Berger's short fiction is a delight.

Mr. Berger's short fiction being collected for the first time (the 1984 Lord John Press limited edition of _Granted Wishes_ was not a collection) should be cause for celebration. Instead, this e-book has appeared without so much as a simper of appreciation. No surprise, I suppose, as Mr. Berger's work has never, outside of _Little Big Man_, attracted much attention or sold very well. Having read all 23 of Mr. Berger's novels, and been richly entertained by each of them, I've never understood the public's indifference to his writing. His stories, whether novel length, or as is the case here, in short form, are always amusing.

Mr. Berger is a master of language, and the stories chosen for this collection are uniformly excellent. Then there is the bonus material. What a pleasure it is to have some photographs other than those which have appeared on dust jackets over the last 55 years. Seeing Mr. Berger in the prime of life, clearly enjoying himself, was alone worth the price of the e-book.

A treat!

Having something new to read from Thomas Berger is always a treat, and this collection of short stories does not disappoint. The theme of abnormal occurrences is ripe for Thomas' uncanny ability to present characters who are either absurd themselves or faced with absurd situations. Even when writing about what appears to be a comically ridiculous situation, his characters display human actions and emotions that always ring true.

"Planet of the Losers," one of my two favorite stories in this collection, describes the interaction between a man and an alien. The exchange between the two, coupled with the backstory of the main character's own issues, is deeply engaging. Little elements like having the main character teach the very human looking alien that legs (which he has) can bend are truly funny in this author's talented hands.

"Granted Wishes" is classic Thomas Berger and calls to mind his great novels "Changing the Past" and "Being Invisible"; two of my all time favorite books. The story is dark though comic and ends with a true sucker punch that will undoubtedly surprise.

So why only four stars? While I thoroughly enjoyed the great majority of the stories in this collection, there is a group of stories under the heading "Tales of the Animal Crime Squad" that I simply did not enjoy and actually wound up skimming just so I could move on to a better selection.

More brilliance from America's (perhaps the world's) greatest living novelist

This collection of short fiction from the genius (and ingenious)Thomas Berger does not disappoint. He never does. As a matter of fact, I'm still laughing at the outrageous comedy (as subtle as it is at times) and I'm still reeling from the powerful punches of psychological insight Berger delivers on nearly every page. Berger's use of language never fails to amaze me -- but don't mind me, I'd probably be mesmerized by reading his description of the ingredients in a jar of mayo, if he ever chose to write that. Do yourself a big favor you won't soon forget and read Abnormal Occurrences. You'll be writing a laudatory review soon after finishing the last page.
