Andrew Fiu came to Ponsonby, Auckland as a three-year-old, part of the wave of immigration from Samoa that turned Auckland's inner city suburbs into a vibrant cultural melting pot. When you are writing a book or anything of note you are hoping that someone will like it enough to publish it. I was ecstatic  to have done that with my literary agent. The following year it was warmly received by New Zealand's media and to be honest I could not have wished for more as a new author. The coverage and the inclusion of Purple Heart as a study tool for many colleges has overwhelmed me to the point where it has to me at least, reached its zenith.

Purple Heart has now found its way into Colleges and Universities in New Zealand where it is used in English departments both as a reading tool, a study reference and a study lesson for upcoming NCEA Exams. The National Certificate of Education Achievement (NCEA) challenges students of all abilities in all learning areas and shows credits and grades for separate skills and knowledge.

When I finished the book, I had undergone five open heart surgeries. Since it's publication I have had another open heart surgery (25 February 2010, Auckland Hospital;, performed by my brilliant surgeon, Mr P. Raudkivi) and then a pace maker inserted in February 2011.

The heart surgery did not go smoothly and my friends and family were called in at 9pm to the Intensive Care unit to bid me farewell. The doctors could not stop the bleeding and it was touch and go for quite a few hours I've been told. Perhaps it was my mother steadfastly clinging to her rosary beads and sending novena after novena into the stratosphere that helped, but my bleeding stopped after the use of some very experimental drugs, those normally used to stop pregnant women from hemorrhaging.

I am so grateful for my life, so grateful for the faith shown in me by doctors, medical staff, family and friends to have pulled through. I hope you enjoy reading Purple Heart and if my story can help someone else out there that needs to believe they can also overcome obstacles once thought impossible, all I have gone through will be worth it.

Ta'afuli Andrew Fiu was born in 1965 in the village of Lefaga, Matautu, a small province of Apia in Western Samoa. In 1970, Andrew, his parents and little brother migrated to Auckland, New Zealand.

In 1979 at the age of 14, a doctor's misdiagnosis of his condition as a 'bad flu' resulted in rheumatic fever. Damaging Andrew's heart valves and becoming untreatable through medication. During the next 26 years, he underwent four 'planned' open heart surgeries and one unscheduled reopening.

The unscheduled operation occurred as his blood pressure dropped while being returned to intensive care after his third open heart surgery. The surgeon, Mr Alan Kerr, reopened him in an unused room in ICU and massaged his heart with his hands to improve the circulation until he could be returned to theatre.

According to some health professionals, surviving five open heart surgeries is a record.

He has faced many obstacles in the past 26 years. On two different occasions he has died and been revived. He has watched helplessly as friends and roommates die and faced everyday with an uncertain future.

Andrew grew up in hospital. His life experiences did not include school camping trips or first love relationships. It did not include a 'coming of age' as one would know it, but a coming of age can happen in the most unlikely of places. Though the cardiac ward is not the first place one thinks of, it has armed him with life experiences most people will never encounter.

His story is one of determination, courage and inspiration.

Although he must continue to live with a rainbow coloured cocktail of various medications, he is fit and happy. He thrives and still continues to be the optimist most of us wish we were. This book is a true story that will move and inspire as he talks of the challenges and hurdles he faced and how he overcame them as he fought to stay alive each day. And fights still.

Great read I take my hat off to Andrew Fiu for writing this heart wrenching book about the trials and tribulations of not only having a illness buy also for dealing with a lot of racism back then. It hits home knowing my parents moved to NZ back in 1980 for a better life but having to hold down 4 jobs between the two of them and also selling vegetables at market's to make ends meet for 5 kids with also not being able to speak any English brings a lot of sadness to me.I am now in my early 30s youngest of 5 but understand the true meaning of how it would be for my parents living a life of poverty for their kids.Thankyou Andrew a great read

This book is simply delightful. With laugh out loud humour and great compassion for the foibles of others it shares a truly courageous story. Without any pretension it also makes a significant contribution to modern NZ history and provides a compelling example of personal courage and the importance of family and optimism. Having obtained a PhD from the Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex,UK, he has worked for the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research, Ibadan, the African Technology Policy Studies Network, UNCTAD and UNU-INTECH (now MERIT). He is currently Director of the Monitoring and Research Division at UN-HABITAT in Nairobi.

Padmashree Gehl Sampath is an expert on innovation and development issues having worked for several years as a Researcher at the United Nations University-MERIT and then as a Lecturer on International Development and Innovation at the Open University, UK. She is currently a United Nations staff member at UNCTAD, Geneva and has contributed extensively to international and regional debates on these issues through her research and from the various projects that she has led in the field.

Der Schwerpunkt dieser Seminararbeit soll die Auswirkungen der Inflation auf andere wirtschaftliche Größen aufzeigen. Diesbezüglich wurde die Auswirkung auf Einkommen und Vermögen , Konsum und Sparen , Investitionen und Unternehmensgewinne , Wachstum und Beschäftigung und Steuern und öffentliche Ausgaben erarbeitet. Zur Einführung in das Thema wird zu Beginn erklärt, was unter Inflation zu verstehen ist, wie sie gemessen wird und wie sich Deflation von ihr unterscheidet. Den Abschluss der Arbeit bildet ein Fazit und die erarbeiteten Kenntnisse werden am Beispiel der Inflation in den USA nach dem Ölpreisschock von 1973 angewandt.

John R. McIntyre, Ph. D. is the founding Director of the Georgia Institute of Technology CIBER , Professor of Management (Strategy Area) in the College of Management with a courtesy appointment in International Relations in the Georgia Tech’s Sam Nunn School of International Affairs. He received his graduate education at Northeastern University, completing his Ph.D. at the University of Georgia. Prior to joining Georgia Tech in September 1981, he was Research Associate for International Management at the Dean Rusk Center of the University of Georgia Law School. He has published in journals such as Technology and Society, Public Administration Quarterly, International Management Review, Defence Analysis, Studies in Comparative and International Development, The Journal of European Marketing, Politique Internationale, International Executive, International Trade Journal, among others.

Very clear and understanding of the past and actual China development and rules in the globalization and political transformation. The references are excellent. Excellent book and work team. I recommend this book not only for students but for all professionals who want a better understanding and some view of the future of China.

"China Rules" is a collection of papers dealing with the political economy of China an how it is 'racing to the future;' it also covers the internationalization of Chinese commerce, with examples in auto parts and telecommunicatinos. Editor Alon points out that accepting the possibility that a socialist/communist system could possibly turn into an incubator for capitalist dynamics rivaling those of free market economies is as difficult for vested interests in the U.S. to comprehend as it is to conceive that non-democratic rule of China has worked perhaps better than democracy could have. Meanwhile, U.S. soft power declines and China's 'charm offense' accelerates the trend. Governments at all levels in China have been transformed from mere regulators into advocates of local and national enterprises. "Lifeblood" industries (automotive, oil and petrochemicals, aviation and aerospace, pharmaceuticals, construction) are significantly controlled by Beijing; other state-owned-enterprises (SOEs) are government-controlled only to the extent they are part of its overall economic growth objective, and for that purpose.

China is the largest outward FDI investor (cumulative $90.6 billion, as of 2006) of developing nations. Purposes include learning to establish brands, learning marketing, diversifying, reducing protectionism threats, obtaining scarce resources. Conversely, China has taken in $650 billion in FDI since 1978.

Lenovo is 27% owned by the government. It acquired IBM's former PC division in 2005 for $1.75 billion and by 2009 was the 4th largest PC vendor in the world. It makes desktops, laptops, monitors, projectors, and servers.

Galanz is the world's largest microwave producer. It originally traded in duck feathers; in 1993 it made a deal with Toshiba for microwave technology and now makes about 15 million/year (40% of the world market), has 600 patents of its own, and recently expanded into air conditioners.

Haier is the 4th-largest producer of white-goods in the world - air conditioners, refrigerators, washers/dryers, and wine coolers. It is partially owned by the Chinese government. Sales primarily go to Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Best Buy, Home Depot, Office Depot, Target, Sam's Costco, and Sears. It's bid to buy Maytag was narrowly beat by Whirlpool.

About the Author
Russell Herman Conwell (February 15, 1843 – December 6, 1925) was an American Baptist minister, orator, philanthropist, lawyer, and writer. He is best remembered as the founder and first president of Temple University in Philadelphia.

The original inspiration for his most famous essay, "Acres of Diamonds," occurred in 1869 when Conwell was traveling in the Middle East. The work began as a speech, "at first given," wrote Conwell in 1913, "before a reunion of my old comrades of the Forty-sixth Massachusetts Regiment, which served in the Civil War and in which I was captain."

The central idea of the work is that one need not look elsewhere for opportunity, achievement, or fortune—the resources to achieve all good things are present in one's own community.

Conwell's name lives on in the present-day Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, located in South Hamilton, Massachusetts.

The Invisibility of the Obvious

Toward the end of his life, Russell H. Conwell (1843-1925) observed, "I am astonished that so many people should care to hear this story over again. Indeed, this lecture has become a study in psychology; it often breaks all rules of oratory, departs from the precepts of rhetoric, and yet remains the most popular of any lecture I have delivered in the fifty-seven years of my public life. I have sometimes studied for a year upon a lecture and made careful research, and then presented the lecture just once -- never delivered it again. I put too much work on it. But this had no work on it -- thrown together perfectly at random, spoken offhand without any special preparation, and it succeeds when the thing we study, work over, adjust to a plan, is an entire failure." He then went on to explain to each audience that "acres of diamonds are to be found in this city, and you are to find them. Many have found them. And what man has done, man can do. [They are] are not in far-away mountains or in distant seas; they are in your own back yard if you will but dig for them." These comments provide an excellent introduction to Conwell's book. As I read it, I thought about Dorothy in L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz. Only after a series of adventures far from Kansas did she realize that "there's no place like home." What Conwell has in mind involves far more than such appreciation, however. The tale he shares in this book, concerning a wealthy Persian named Ali Hafed, demonstrates that almost everything we may seek elsewhere is already in our lives and available to us.

one of the greatest books ever written

Whoever said that great things come in small packages, must have had this book in mind. Conwell tells the story of a man who looked for diamonds and travelled the whole world to find them. After years of searching he came back home empty handed. His wife remarried and he was destitute. By accident one day he found the diamonds in his own backyard. The moral is obvious: Examine all the evidence to find truth. Most of the time its right under your nose. Although conwell uses this story to illustrate some matters of business, the message can be applied to anything. The smartest people in the world use the principles in this book whether they know it or not. The smart and succesful are usually in the minority and probably always will be. Others may not grasp the genius in this book, but the principles of success are here.

A Small Gem Everyone Should Read

This book is small, eloquent, and easy to understand. It is about life, success, money, and priorities, what these things are and aren't, and will continue to challenge the way most of us choose to live our lives for years. Read this one instead of "Who Moved My Cheese."
