A level 2 Oxford Bookworms Library graded reader. Retold for Learners of English by Jennifer Bassett

William Shakespeare. Born April 1564, at Stratford-upon-Avon. Died April 1616. Married Anne Hathaway: two daughters, one son. Actor, poet, famous playwright. Wrote nearly forty plays.

But what was he like as a man? What did he think about when he rode into London for the first time . . . or when he was writing his plays Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet . . . or when his only son died?

We know the facts of his life, but we can only guess at his hopes, his fears, his dreams.

As a Research Reference
By Tokyo Kurz
Bassett tells the story of Shakespeare's life through the eyes of a fictional boyhood friend, Toby. Toby stays with Shakespeare throughout his whole life and outlives him. Toby is Bassett's device to be able to introduce some personalized elements into what otherwise would be a boring story for most kids. In reality not that much is known about Shakespeare! There are even a whole 14 years of his life that are "lost", where he falls from sight in the historical record.

Though the book is partly fictionalized it still provides good research material for a class unit about Elizabethan England. The backdrop of evolving political change is discussed (Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway, is represented as a Puritan, and Shakespeare's plays were presented to two monarchs of England), the many appearances of the Plague and short life spans in general, the danger of fire, the British love of theatrical entertainment, and the ability of a few to become star actors (and rich) are among the many themes touched upon. The book is accessible to readers with a 700 headword count, for example, classes/students whose vocabulary is not so advanced such as non-native English speakers or younger students.

Together with other sources, this book is useful in sparking interest in the era in which Shakespeare lived and wrote.

ASIDE: Bassett sticks mostly to the facts, but the facts are not many! She does not hint at the debate over the true authorship of Shakespeare's plays. To spark this debate, I can suggest including another book, _Shakespeare's Secret_ by Elise Broach, a contemporary fiction story about a stolen diamond that supposedly traces back several hundred years to Anne Boleyn, mother of Queen Elizabeth I. The protagonist is named after Hero, the beautiful young daughter of Leonato, in Shakespeare's _Much Ado About Nothing_. The name alone, "Hero" for a girl, causes whispers and a flurry of questions in a group of sixth graders!

Who are the Messianic Jews? What do they believe and practice? What is the Jewish community's reaction to the development of Messianic Judaism? In this pioneering study, Dan Cohn-Sherbok traces the development of the Messianic movement from ancient times to its transformation after World War II. Focusing on the nature of the movement today, the volume continues with a detailed examination of Messianic practices, and the place of Messianic Judaism within the contemporary Jewish community.

Review
"a truly boundary-crossing book...What is remarkable and praiseworthy about this book is first, that Professor Dan Cohn-Sherbok is prepared to examine sympathetically a movement that many Jews believe to be beyond the pale and beneath contempt, a threat to the very identity and survival of Judaism. Secondly, that in a gentle way he takes up their claim to be authentically Jewish and deals with it seriously[...]let's hear more of this. And let's hear more of Dan Cohn-Sherbok."—Baptist Times

"Finally, someone in the Jewish world has the courage to say what needs to be said. Dan Cohn-Sherbok, with his usual lucidity and analytic skills, has demonstrated that Messianic Jews have the right to be included in the Jewish people. The path to his conclusion is filled with fascinating historical and confessional revelations."-Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine, The Birmingham Temple, Farmington Hills, Michigan

"I appreciate the objectivity of Professor Cohn-Sherbok and his attention to the historical details and theological nuances represented by the Messianic movement. His compilation of various Messianic liturgies and prayers will be most helpful to Messianic Jews and to those who wish to understand the movement. His advocacy of a pluralistic model for contemporary life and community can only lead to deeper and more respectful relationships between Jewish believers in Yeshua and others within the greater world-wide community. This is a must read for all Jewish believers in Yeshua, evangelical Christina leaders and all those whose hearts yearn for the peace of Jerusalem."-Mitch Glaser, Present, Chosen People Ministries

"It is both an unusual and a welcome development to find a constructive study of Messianic Jews from a leading Jewish academic rabbi."—Themelios 26.2

"The book is memorable for its clarity and directness. It is also fair - Cohn-Sherbok attends to the diversity of views and structures within Messianic Judaism. He quotes at length from histories, liturgies and creeds produced by various congregations. This makes accessible much material not readily available to the British readers and is likely to make Messianic Judaism a useful resource for undergraduates and seminarians. What comes through particularly well is the extent to which the ambiguity of Jewish believers' indentity is as much an internal problem as it is an internally imposed construct."—Journal of Belief and Values

"Dan Cohn-Sherbok, first Professor of Judaism at the University of Wales, is a well-known, encyclopaedic chronicler and commentator on the various Judaisms; and in this book he engages with the most controversial of all, often assembling material which would be very difficult to find conveniently elsewhere…fascinating reading."—Reform

"Cohn-Sherbok has done a commendable job of depicting the history and practice of Messianic Judaism in ancient and modern times in what wil no doubt prove to be a valuable and user-friendly resource for Messianic Jews and those interested in the movement. The author has also done a service to Messianic Jews. By taking the time and effort to dedicate a fair-handed book to the movement, Cohn-Sherbok has aided the Messianic Jewish movement in its quest for recognition, affirmation, and acceptance by the wider Jewish community."—Akiva Cohen, Mishkan

"He has written a most interesting assessment of Jewish believers in Jesus who are grappling with the challenges of remaining loyal to the claims of Yeshua (Jesus) while being committed to their Jewish ethnic and cultural traditions." —The Evangelical Times

"varied, richly textured, often colourful history....masterful and even-handed treatment of this complicated issue."—Leo Serroul, Toronto Journal of Theology, Fall 2002

Model & Mitzvah - (review written by) Rabbi Bruce Cohen
By Bruce Cohen
In the summer of 1962, the late American President John F. Kennedy said "If we cannot come to agreement, at least we can make the world safe for diversity." Rabbi Dan Cohn-Sherbok's recent book has taken an important step in that direction within the Jewish world. Dan invited me to write a review of "Messianic Judaism," and because of the book's character, I am very glad he did. In the past year alone, two books on Messianic Judaism have been published by rabbis from within mainstream Jewish denominations. This is an extraordinary shift in theologic climate in and of itself. Mere years ago, it was nearly impossible to find a rabbi outside Messianic Judaism who would call Messianic Judaism any kind of "Judaism." Cohn-Sherbok's book has a particularly poiginant opening, because he describes its catalyst as having been Messianic Judaism's current ubiquity in the Jewish world. He asserts that wherever you go among Jewry today, at least one member of most extended Jewish families has been touched in some way by Messianic Judaism: a sister, a brother, a cousin - someone. This is an astonishing and courageous an approach. Cohn-Sherbok states unequivocally that Messianic Judaism is "on the map" in the Jewish world, and he invites all to learn to navigate in relation to its existence. Like an explorer having come upon a new island in the common routes of commerce, he dares to step onto the landscape, travel it, study it, and bring back a useful map to the world still unfamiliar with the territory. The amount of objectivity Cohn-Sherbok was able to summon to a highly controversial topic for his sphere was admirable. His book is a remarkably even-handed examination. He begins with Messianic Judaism's roots in antiquity; then, he examines its more recent history and the arc of its modern development. He also scrutinizes and describes current practices of the Movement, and does so without the slightest hint of "tongue in cheek" undertones. He writes as a sincere academician within the gates of Judaism, treating a topic of value to the Jewish world he serves. The book will be of great use to Messianic Jews, because Cohn-Sherbok is an outsider to the eddies and currents within Modern Messianism; he therefore writes about somewhat partisan issues with a clarity many will find refreshing. Further, his examinations of Messianic practice will be quite valuable for Messianic laity and clergy alike. For non-Messianic Jews, the book will serve two valuable purposes. Firstly, it will provide a "window" into Messianism opened by a trusted hand; thus, many of our people who would never darken the door of a Messianic synagogue will be given a virtual tour they otherwise would not have obtained. Secondly, Cohn-Sherbok's book models an approach to differences within the gates of Judaism I daresay we all hope will be more common in the future: putting aside knee-jerk invalidation reflexes in order to give strongly differing views a fair and dispassionate hearing on their merits. With several varieties of mainstream Judaism currently warring with one another to the extent that some are calling others "not Judaism at all" - it is quite refreshing to see Messianic Judaism on the table as a Jewish "in-house" issue for reasoning Jewish discussion. Rabbi Dan Cohn-Sherbok has set a precedent for fostering intra-Judaic toleration, and has at the same time modeled dispassionate theological exploration for his colleagues. Thus, with his book, Rabbi Cohn-Sherbok as done a double "mitzvah" (good deed).

messianic judaism
By bruce schloss
This is a profoundly interesting book. There is no doubt the Jewish community detests Messianic Judaism and puts it about on a par with holocaust denial. Sadly, this is a knee-jerk reaction. Rabbi Cohn-Sherbok who is himself a Reform Jew and, from the evidence of his other books shares none of the beliefs of the Messianic community, has done an excellent job in presenting the history, beliefs and practices of the group objectively. It is an important piece of research and he has talked to critics of the movement as well as adherents. From his account, it is hard to imagine why any rational person would want to join the movement, but nonetheless it does appeart to be growing. If this is the case then it is important that the mainstream Jewish community voices its objections from the basis of secure knowledge. This book is an informed and fascinating piece of work and as such should be part of the library of every yeshiva, rabbinical college and synagogue. If the mainstream community were only secure enough to learn from fringe movements and make some attempt to understand their appeal to the more vulnerable members of our community, our synagogues might be fuller and our young people less turned off. Instead, the community prefers blanket condemnation and unreasoned abuse. No wonder the educated youth of today are disaffected. Rabbi Cohn-Sherbok is to be congratulated on his single-handed attempt to redress the balance; it is splendid to find someone in this day and age who takes Milton's defence of a free press seriously; as the great seventeenth century poet put it in his 'Areopagitica', 'Whoever knew Truth put to the worst in free and open discussion.' The Jewish community has nothing to fear from the Messianics; we simply need to be more confident in what we ourselves have to offer.

A Great Read for Martial Artist and Lay person alike
By Scott Masterton
Chojun is the third Powell book that I've read. Waking Dragons was the first, an autobiographical story of Powells early journey in the martial arts; Sudden Dawn, the story of a young Da mo (Buddha) and finally Chojun, the story of Chojun Miyagi, the father of Goju Ryu. It does not dissappoint. Sudden Dawn did a wonderful job of describing the essence of the Buddha, so too does Chojun describe the essence of Miyagi.

The story is told through the eyes of a fictional young man and student of Chojun Miyagi's; Powell does a wonderful job of working the facts of Miyagi's life into a great story but more important than the fact is the time period that shaped the Karate master. As an American I've never experienced the reality of an invading force coming into my land and the fight to drive them out. Powell does an admirable job of making the reader feel what it would be like to not only be invaded by a foreign country, but to also be used as vassals of Japan to fight a war that they did not start.

As a martial artist I enjoyed this very much, but as someone fascinated by history I enjoyed it even more. I highly recommend Chojun to those interested in the history of Goju Ryu or to anyone looking to experience a taste of what it might have been like being on the "other side".

A great book. I'm looking forward to more from Mr. Powell.

A nove, about Chojun Miyagi
By Carlos A. Simmons
The book was a really good read. It reads like someone writing from memory even though it is part fiction and part researched reality. I expected to get more martial arts insight but I got more life insights from my own memories. I even felt a lot of emotion on certify time in Okinawa, my martial art training and my relationship with the master and everyone else in training just as the main character in the novel. It also made me know how fortunate I was to have my instructor around for a great deal longer than 20 years.

Good historical FICTION
By Konstantin Ozerinsky
This is a good read for someone who is interested in the subject matter and enjoys a good novel. Its very well written, good plot, good characters, but in the end it really walks a line between really getting into the characters, and really getting into the history. In the end, it does neither. We learn very little about the life of Chojun Miyagi that we didn't know before, and we gain little insight into Karate from his fictional representation.

But, I still liked it.

The Nashville Way: Racial Etiquette and the Struggle for Social Justice in a Southern City (Politics and Culture in the Twentieth-Century S

Among Nashville’s many slogans, the one that best reflects its emphasis on manners and decorum is the Nashville Way, a phrase coined by boosters to tout what they viewed as the city’s amicable race relations. Benjamin Houston offers the first scholarly book on the history of civil rights in Nashville, providing new insights and critiques of this moderate progressivism for which the city has long been credited.

Civil rights leaders such as John Lewis, James Bevel, Diane Nash, and James Lawson who came into their own in Nashville were devoted to nonviolent direct action, or what Houston calls the “black Nashville Way.” Through the dramatic story of Nashville’s 1960 lunch counter sit-ins, Houston shows how these activists used nonviolence to disrupt the coercive script of day-to-day race relations. Nonviolence brought the threat of its opposite—white violence—into stark contrast, revealing that the Nashville Way was actually built on a complex relationship between etiquette and brute force. Houston goes on to detail how racial etiquette forged in the era of Jim Crow was updated in the civil rights era. Combined with this updated racial etiquette, deeper structural forces of politics and urban renewal dictate racial realities to this day.

In The Nashville Way, Houston shows that white power was surprisingly adaptable. But the black Nashville Way also proved resilient as it was embraced by thousands of activists who continued to fight battles over schools, highway construction, and economic justice even after most Americans shifted their focus to southern hotspots like Birmingham and Memphis.

Review

The civil rights saga of Nashville in the decades following World War II is a complicated and bittersweet story of struggle and resistance, change and continuity, success and disappointment; and Houston captures it all with a rich narrative of black and white southerners engaged in a historical drama of national and even international importance. The first book to offer a comprehensive and balanced study of the city’s distinctive racial and movement cultures, The Nashville Way fills an enormous gap in civil rights and southern historiography.

(Raymond Arsenault author of Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice)

Houston’s book details the particular nature of the Nashville community and the way civil rights unfolded there but also adds to our understanding of the civil rights movement more broadly. It is engagingly written, even gripping at times, and its audience should include the educated bookbuying public in and around Nashville.

(Tracy E. K’Meyer author of Civil Rights in the Gateway to the South: Louisville, Kentucky, 1945–1980)

Any interested in black power and white response in the South will find [The Nashville Way] a specific title, perfect for college-level social issues holdings.

(Midwest Book Review)

The Nashville Way, the first scholarly work and the first history of civil rights in Nashville since David Halberstam's The Children, fills a gap in civil rights and southern historiography. It should be of interest to anyone interested in the history of Nashville and the African American struggle for racial justice during the movement for civil rights.

(Linda T. Wynn The Courier)

Houston has effectively revealed the turmoil and struggle behind the veil of racial etiquette and gentility in this southern city.

(Victoria Wolcott American Historical Review)

Nashville, Tennessee had perhaps the most fully formed of the student-centered civil rights movements that emerged in the early 1960s. Houston tells the story of this movement in substantial depth in this fine monograph.

(D. C. Catsam Choice)

My Larger Education (Unabridged Start Publishing LLC), by Booker T. Washington

In My Larger Education, Booker T. Washington explains how he came by his positions on race relations, by describing the people who influenced him during the founding of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute of Alabama. Washington was constantly, and often bitterly, criticized by his contemporaries for being too conciliatory to whites and not concerned enough about civil rights. It would not be until after his death that the world would find out that he had indeed worked a great deal for civil rights anonymously behind the scenes.

Women Mystics and Sufi Shrines in India (Studies in Comparative Religion), by Kelly Pemberton

Women Mystics and Sufi Shrines in India combines historical data with years of ethnographic fieldwork to investigate women's participation in the culture of Sufi shrines in India and the manner in which this participation both complicates and sustains traditional conceptions of Islamic womanhood. Kelly Pemberton grounds her firsthand research into India's Sufi shrines and saints by setting her observations against the historical backdrop of colonial-era discourses by British civil servants, Orientalist scholars, and Muslim reformists and the assumptive portrayals of women's activities in the milieu of Sufi orders and shrines inherent in these accounts. These early narratives, Pemberton holds, are driven by social, economic, intellectual, and political undercurrents of self-interest that shaped Western understanding of Indian Muslims and, in particular, of women's participation in the institutions of Sufism.

Pemberton's research offers a corrective by assessing the contemporary circumstances under which a woman may be recognized as a spiritual authority or guide—despite official denial of such status—and by examining the discrepancies between the commonly held belief that women cannot perform in the public setting of shrines and her own observations of women doing precisely that. She demonstrates that the existence of multiple models of master and disciple relationships have opened avenues for women to be recognized as spiritual authorities in their own right. Specifically Pemberton explores the work of performance, recitation, and ritual mediation carried out by women connected with Sufi orders through kinship and spiritual ties, and she maps shifting ideas about women's involvement in public ritual events in a variety of contexts, circumstances, and genres of performance. She also highlights the private petitioning of saints, the Prophet, and God performed by poor women of low social standing in Bihar Sharif. These women are often perceived as being exceptionally close to God yet are compelled to operate outside the public sphere of major shrines.

Throughout this groundbreaking study, Pemberton sets observed practices of lived religious experiences against the boundaries established by prescriptive behavioral models of Islam to illustrate how the varied reasons given for why women cannot become spiritual masters conflict with the need in Sufi circles for them to do exactly that. Thus this work also invites further inquiry into the ambiguities to be found in Islam's foundational framework for belief and practice.

Review
"For any scholar with an even passing interest in Sufism or the general role of women in South Asian Islam, this book is not only eminently readable, but an invaluable contribution to available literature." --Janet M. Powers, Religion

In Character Building are thirty seven addresses that Booker T. Washington gave before students, faculty, and guests at the Tuskegee Institute. These addresses take the form of timeless advice on a number of subjects, very motivational and uplifting. Washington was constantly, and often bitterly, criticized by his contemporaries for being too conciliatory to whites and not concerned enough about civil rights. It would not be until after his death that the world would find out that he had indeed worked a great deal for civil rights anonymously behind the scenes.

Still Good for Today
By Andre M.
This is a collection of BTW's Sunday sermons to his Tuskegee students. Originally published in 1902, the lessons on thrift, clean living, sharing what you learn with others, the need to read, and the value of education of the heart as well as the head are still valuable a century later. Does not date too badly and with so many young people growing up today without this kind of advice in the home, it's needed just as much today.
Many uninformed people dismiss BTW as an "Uncle Tom," but the publication of more of his writings like this will show that in spite of any faults, he was a very useful person in the upliftment of people. Read it and see.

Character Building
By Carol A. Cook
Character Building (An African American Heritage Book) This book has so many wonderful life lessons which are just as powerful and thought-provoking today as they were when Booker T. Washington wrote them at the turn of the 20th century. I try to read an essay to my students on a regular basis because the essays really hit home with some of the issues my students have. The essays are well-written and easy to read and understand.

Proves that some kinds of advice are timeless. If you are reading a historical review of the man's life, you should read his own words too.

Jaw-dropping stories interspersed with other content
By Walter Nissen
Full disclosure: I bought this book because I know the author's daughter from high school.

I was captivated (no pun intended) by the author's stories about the German camps set up for Polish POWs after Hilter's monthlong conquest. The other stories about Soviet work camps in Siberia were equally gripping. Rarely have I felt so acutely the old phrase, "One death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic." Our everyday world is so privileged and peaceful that these stories bring home the horror in a way that still leaves me in disbelief. Brutality and kindness are vividly presented in this collection of stories.

The prose is grammatical but workmanlike; it does not need to dramatize given the inherent drama of the events, but at times it repeats itself. There are large sections dealing with the author's postwar years at the Cleveland Public Library and a Polish-language Pennsylvania college that are no doubt precious to his family and colleagues but I skipped them. Due to the decision to present the stories individually and give each person a section entirely to their own, the chronology is somewhat confusing. For instance, the last chapters deal in large part with the defense of Warsaw, which happened before the events in the POW camps described in the first chapters. Finally, the physical quality of my brand-new book was poor, with ripples in the cover and the words "bad lam" (lamination) written in green marker on the inside cover.

I am grateful to have read "Poles Apart," as it tells of an experience that is conveyed inadequately by the history instruction one gets about WWII. It specifically is not telling the larger story of Jewish experience with Hitler, which is documented in many other books, but the Polish experience as relayed by and to the late Jerzy Maciuszko is astonishing on its own.

Insights into the 1939 War, German-Soviet Conquest and Rule of Poland, Polish Resistance, etc.
By Jan Peczkis
This book is an anthology of Poles and their experiences during WWII. They are mainly those who are relatives of the author, and mainly are Poles from the Cleveland area. The experiences include that of fighting against the Germans in the 1939 war, captivity in Nazi German and Soviet camps, surviving the occupying powers during and after the war, and in rebuilding life in the west after WWII. A number of the postwar works of author Jerzy J. Maciuszko are included, as are some of his awards and memorabilia.

The invading Germans took the author, an officer cadet, prisoner near Pomorze during the 1939 war. The POWs were poorly fed. The German authorities, in open defiance of the Geneva Convention, forced these officer POWs to perform forced labor. (p. 23).

Both the German and Soviet nations episodically forced their Polish captives to work all seven days a week. (pp. 49-50, p. 200). This not only deprived the captives of much-needed rest, but also deprived them of being able to look forward to a day off.

Jerzy J. Maciuszko describes the experiences of Anthony (Antoni) Palmowski. He rejects the commonly seen de-Germanization of the Nazis, and points out that every single Nazi he met was a German. (p. 216).

Eugene Bak and his family was deported by the Soviets to the interior of the USSR, as described by Jerzy J. Maciuszko. Each of the train cars were overcrowded with 35-40 passengers. (p. 176). This adds to numerous other testimonies that refute the ridiculously low 25-per-car official Soviet figures, on which their undercounted Polish-deportee figure (of only 400,000 or less) is based. For more on this, please click on Polish Poetry from the Soviet Gulags: Recovering a Lost Literature, and read the detailed Peczkis review.

MAUTHAUSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP

Author Jerzy J. Maciuszko describes some Poles he knew who were incarcerated by the Germans at Mauthausen--near Linz, Austria. Out of a group of 200 Poles, only 8 survived the five-year captivity (May 1940--May 1945). (p. 218). Now consider the fact that it has been argued that extermination camps, in which Jews died, should not be conflated with "ordinary" concentration camps, in which Poles were housed, because Poles had some chance of survival. While this is technically true, the differences were small (zero percent for death camps versus four percent for concentration camps).

The Polish inmates reported that, starting in 1945, the Jewish inmates of Mauthausen were treated noticeable better, and were now given better clothes. (pp. 226-227). This corroborates similar testimonies elsewhere.

THE SOVIET-BETRAYED WARSAW UPRISING (1944)

Author Jerzy J. Maciuszko reproduces several written testimonies of Cleveland-area Polish veterans of the Warsaw Uprising. I elaborate on two of them.

Dr. Wojciech Rostafinski was an eyewitness to the A. K. (ARMIA KRAJOWA)'s liberation of Jews imprisoned in the Gesiowka concentration camp. The Polish insurgents had captured a German Panther tank, and then used it to break through the barricades protecting the camp. They also used the shells of the tank to put all eight brick gun towers out of action around the camp. (pp. 270-273).

Jerzy Grabowski recounts a daring A. K. operation behind German lines. The Poles' assignment was to sever German phone wires. German sentries spotted the Poles. With nerves of steel, the insurgents removed their red- and white-band insignia, and acted as if they were workers. The ruse worked! The intrepid Poles completed their mission and returned to Polish lines without suffering any losses. (pp. 283-285).
