In the spring of a certain year, not far from the close of the nineteenth century, when the political relations between the United States and Great Britain became so strained that careful observers on both sides of the Atlantic were forced to the belief that a serious break in these relations might be looked for at any time, the fishing schooner Eliza Drum sailed from a port in Maine for the banks of Newfoundland.

A lovely science fiction fantasy of the end of all wars
By Theodore A. Rushton
This charming fantasy, similar to "the lady or the tiger' which is one of Stockton's other stories, is reminiscent of Jules Verne and may represent the birth of American science fiction.
It begins when Canada seizes an American fishing boat after it strays into Canadian waters. Bad Canucks! In response, an infuriated American public demands war on Great Britain. War is declared for a load of codfish; then the Americans realize they are vastly outclassed by a tremendously superior Royal Navy.
Not to worry! A Syndicate of powerful capitalists privatizes the war, builds a few impregnable ships and wages war for a price. Their surprise weapon is equivalent to a nuclear bomb. To demonstrate, instead of levelling a Canadian city they obliterate an empty fortress and the cliff on which it was built.
"This was not war! It was something supernatural, awful! They were not frightened; they were oppressed and appalled," Stockton wrote of the Canadian reaction.
Suffice to say, the Canadians got the message. The Brits didn't, so a warship made part of the coast of Wales disappear. The Brits got the message and surrendered. A wonderful peace treaty was signed, and the Syndicate was paid a vast sum of money for winning so quickly.
All nations, having seen this awesome power which humbled the mightiest nation on Earth, began to disarm. In 1889, Stockton made it sound like the U.S. monopoly on nuclear weapons after 1945; like Einstein, he predicted, "Hereafter, if battles must be fought, they would be battles of annihilation."
Stockton assumed universal wisdom came very quickly as, "all the nations of the world began to teach English in their schools, and the Spirit of Civilization raised her head with a confident smile."
Fantasy? Perhaps, but when Alfred Nobel invented gelignite in 1876 it was so powerful that some thought it would make war impossible. Stockton offers a similar theme; events since then indicate mankind is too much in love with war to abolish it.
In terms of 'The Lady or the Tiger', Stockton's best-known story, the question is intriguing: Given a choice, would mankind choose peace? or the tiger of war and death?

Wow! Total War - USA vs. Canada!
By Felicity Barrington
Wow! USA vs. Canada! Long before South Park devoted its first full length movie about the US attacking Canada, a very serious and fascinating book was written on the subject. As someone who lived in Canada for some years, I was first interested because of this, and found the premise very believable, fishing rights in a world where today, 100 years after the book was written, there are `Cod Wars' between Canada and Spain, and even talk between the US and Canada. As food becomes more and more expensive, we can see this as an issue. There is also talk in some circles about the US taking over Canada for their Water; I say this because this book is very believable.
I really enjoyed this Alternative history book for the political, military and strategic realism - not only for the time it was written, but up to and including today.

An alternative history war between America and Canada!
By John Drake
An Alternative History war novel that has a fascinating premise: Twenty-three men - a War Syndicate - offer to assume the expense of a war for the United States after WAR is declared between the USA and Canada/Britain.
This book has it all, an alternative history war between America and Canada, special inventions that pre-date the actual inventions, (sell propelled navel torpedoes), AND (and this is the part that is very interesting), the US Government farming out the war to a private company! Come on, this is the future! It's about to happen - its already happening with the CIA/NSA, and soon to a military near you.
Add to all this, that this is a darn good story, and you have a winner! So glad I read this, I might of missed it if I had not picked it up by mistake.
Well recommend and VERY imaginative!
