Good story, but very sad

Kate Ross wrote only 4 Julian Kestrel mysteries, all of which take place in the 1820s. This second story focuses on the lives of street-walkers -- prostitutes -- in London. I compare her work to Georgette Heyer, who also writes about London at that time, and while both at good at the details, Heyer is better than Ross at creating believable male characters. Kestrel never for a moment feels like a man to me, which is a major flaw.

The book is also profoundly sad -- Ross does not pull her punches, so don't expect her books to be escapist. She does write with great heart, however, and if you want an engrossing book that will give you some insight into a different world, this book will be worthwhile to you.

The second Julian Kestrel finds us exploring the world of prostitution. The pickpocket turned valet runs into his sister a low class prostitute just after an interesting night. She has had three customers one a nice shopkeeper, one a nob in a carriage, and one a nasty clerk who beat her. Dipper takes her back to Julian's home and there they all discover that she has taken a letter from one of the three. The letter is from a woman in some kind of trouble and she is staying at a home for reforming prostitutes. When the mysterious letter writer ends up dead, Sally goes undercover and Julian gets involved in solving another mystery. A mystery note leads to a murder cover-up in Regency London

The second book in the Julian Kestrel series involves the sister of Julian's valet, Dipper. Sally has been estranged from her brother, and has been working as a prostitute. She meets her brother again after being with 3 clients one evening, one of whom beats her. Dipper takes her back to Julian's home to help her recover. Sally likes to take "souvenirs" from her clients to sell and earn extra money, particularly handkerchiefs. She finds a note among her takings, from a woman who is in trouble. Julian is intrigued, both by the note, and by Sally, and decides to try to find out who the men are and see if they can find the woman in trouble. When they discover that the woman is at a shelter for reformed women, Sally volunteers to go undercover to see what they can find out. Unfortunately, they are too late and the woman has died of an apparent suicide. Julian is suspicious and believes there has been foul play. The mystery deepens and becomes more dangerous as they track down the three men and try to discover why the woman was killed and by whom. The mystery was intriguing and the author does an excellent job of developing the atmosphere of the time, as well as showing the dark side of London.

Uninvolving paranormal

Travis, a wolf changeling, first sees Neva when she's trying to kill herself by jumping off a cliff. It seems she's been changed into a wolf changeling against her will, and is trying to escape her maker. Travis tries to help her adjust to her new condition, but Neva thinks all changelings are killers, based on what she's experienced. Most of the book is spent on Neva and Travis running from her maker Meredith, who's also Neva's sister. Neva constantly complains and takes her experiences out on Travis, who's only trying to help. It gets old pretty quickly. Even more annoying, Neva doesn't want Travis to kill her sister, even though Meredith has butchered several innocents, never mind the threat she still poses. Travis would be justified in wishing Neva had succeeded in offing herself before sticking him with this situation. Things eventually do get more interesting, Travis and Neva get together, and other characters are introduced. This is obviously the beginning of a series so some things are left dangling at the end. The contrivance sets one's teeth on edge, because there was no reason things couldn't have ended in this book, except Neva and Travis walk away. This is not a series I'll follow.

You're not going to want to miss take 2 of Dani Harper's Changelings!

After only a few chapters I found myself transfixed by Dani Harper's new Dark Wolf series. The opening chapters are intense with Neva preparing to throw herself off a cliff rather than face becoming a werewolf at the next full moon. It was impossible to not be moved by her determination to sacrifice her life in order to save countless others. Aside from an incredibly brave heroine, First Bite also brings plenty of action, romance and wolfy goodness to the table. Harper's Changelings are back for another round and if this first installment is anything to go by, you're not going to want to miss take 2!

I love that Harper's Changelings spend an equal amount of time in both of their forms; not all series shelved as "werewolf" deserve to be classified as such but this book most certainly does. The author wastes no time in enlightening readers on the rules of her world and I particularly enjoyed the distinctions between Changelings and werewolves. The two aren't synonyms in this universe; in fact, the latter is actually kind of derogatory which I found interesting. The mystery of what happens to their clothes when they shift continues to entertain and watching the newly turned try to figure out the trick is always good for a laugh.

The story unfolds in such a way that it felt like a werewolves for dummies course in that Travis must instruct Neva on Changeling ways only for her to have to do the same later on for Baker. The second part was more a case of the blind leading the blind but that just made it all the more comical. The plot is nicely balanced which makes the budding romance feel as important as the looming battle against Neva's evil twin. There's also just the right amount of sex to help ensure that all of your senses are equally satisfied. I enjoyed the ticking-time-bomb-like suspense although I was disappointed by the anti-climatic final battle. Geneva's attack strategy was also somewhat questionable.

Travis wasted no time in worming his way into my heart; it's hard not to love a tortured hero with a soft spot for damsels in distress. His patience and willingness to teach Neva how to cope with her new reality also helped to earn him bonus points. The tables end up turning not too long after their first meeting though and I liked that Geneva was given the chance to return the favour and to prove her loyalty. I wish the mate aspect had taken a little longer to kick-in but once set in motion it was easy to get caught up in the two main characters' strong emotional bond. The book ends on a high note with a good old fashioned romp that's sure to make your toes curl with its heat.

First Bite is a must read for all werewolf addicts and the best book yet from Dani Harper.

The faster you deal w/ the bad, the faster things will become good.

Boring writing and a whiny main character combined with a bleh plot. Geneva has been turned into a werewolf (called Changelings in this world) against her will, she escapes from her maker with the plan to kill herself before her first change, she doesn't succeed and lives through it with the help of a man named Travis, also a werewolf.

She and Travis run, with Geneva bitching the entire way, (even through her change) about how much she doesn't want this, doesn't want to know her wolf, doesn't want to learn to control the change and to enjoy this new side of herself. Geneva sees the wolf as a separate entity, as something to be feared and hated, she's utterly convinced that should she embrace the wolf, she'll be nothing but a mindless slave and killer for her sire.

It was about here that I had to stop reading because I just couldn't stand Geneva. All the bitching and whining she was doing, made me agree with Travis, embrace your wolf and learn to control yourself, or you will end up becoming what you hate and fear. Either way, just stop whining and deal already.

might recommend for some readers

I loved the little explanation on the first page about the cover image. The contents page was very helpful for me and I imagine it would be even more helpful in a print version if someone were in need of wisdom on a specific topic.

I came to this book as an agnostic person interested in the study of spirituality in general, including Christianity. So my views are definitely coming from an academic point, not someone who is a believer in any religion. I can only imagine that someone who IS already a believer might potentially be offended by the idea offered in the introduction that the author is writing as god dictates.

I would usually class myself as a fast reader when I read for pleasure. This book was not fast for me to read. If I read at my usual speed, I felt like I was missing nuances that might be important. This appears to be a book meant for serious study, not one someone would read for pure pleasure. For someone who reads as someone reading a myth or children's tale, not taking it as literal truth as intended but instead searching for deeper meaning behind the words, this book is intriguing to study. I found myself reading some of the poems multiple times and I believe some of the poems may contain stuff that is True universally rather than specific religion things.

Despite not being a fast and fun read, the book does seem to make the study of theology accessible to the masses as long as they're patient readers. It's much easier to read this than a bible.

God Speaks to His End-time Calls for Man

This was a unique book to read because of the way it was formatted in the style of poem readings. I like the "I" outline poems. It was as if Jesus was speaking directly to you. The poems, however, are very, very, lengthy and it could be because the author wanted to stress the importance of the message within the poems.The poems alleges the thoughts of Jesus and God's purposes in regards to God's timeline and not man's. Patience will be needed in the reading of the poems as the lines and verses are very repetitive but again I, personally, believe this is done to stress the importance of the messages in the poems. If you keep reading then you will get a better insight to the poem's messages and their true meanings.

The poems, also, express the relationship or non-relationship between God and his goodness and Satan and his sinfulness. One of my favorite sections of the book was the end-time specialty poems. I found this section very enlightening. I especially liked reading the "End-time passion of the Lord" poems. End-time prophecies are mentioned, poems in regards to children and God's thoughts pertaining to endtime-prophecies. Do read the beauty of the morning poems it will make you feel appreciation for the morning time and the beauty in it.I feel the poems main themes were to relate Jesus's messages according to the author, Anthony Eddy and how he feels they pertain to all of mankind as well as establish who Jesus really was and his overall purpose for being on earth.

Mr. Eddy has done it again

I had read books by Mr. Eddy before and this one follows the pattern of the others. He is very consistent with his books and their contents. The sections have clear divisions, so the reader will not be lost even when they decide to stop reading and pick it up again at another time.

I always did enjoy how the author uses the poetry format for his books. It makes it extremely easy to read, and although it does contain a few things that are repeated constantly, the author does say this in the beginning, on the Index.

The book is definitely not for everybody, it takes a lot of time to go through it and as I had already mentioned, a fair bit of repetitiveness. But it is inspiring in the sense that every passage you read contains a great deal of positivity, and sometimes when you read things like this and it gets repeated, it ends up being instilled in your memory even better.

Throughout the book, some readers might be confused by who the author means by "My People" and "My Spirit". If this turns out to be the case for you, just keep reading because eventually the understanding will come. The book talks about "eyelids" and "veins and arteries" of man in a spiritual sense, and it is important for the reader to understand that and grasp the proper context.

Overall the book is enjoyable to read, it is motivational and spiritually inspirational! Kudos once again to Mr. Eddy!

Richard Allen is an international consultant with more than 25 years experience coaching trainers and educators. Cofounder and president of Education Illustrated, he has taken the TrainSmart strategies beyond the United States and Canada to such diverse countries as the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei, Russia, Jordan, and Brazil. Allen is also a popular keynote speaker at international conferences, and he facilitates motivational and teambuilding workshops.

Allen started his educational career as a high school math and drama teacher. In 1985, he became a lead facilitator for SuperCamp―an accelerated learning program for teens―and has since worked with more than 25,000 students worldwide. He completed his doctorate in educational psychology at Arizona State University, where he studied how the human brain receives, processes, and recalls information―knowledge that informs all aspects of his training strategies.

Willy Wood, MA in English, is a highly sought-after speaker on how the human brain learns and effective teaching practices. He speaks regularly in school districts across the United States and at national and international brain and education conferences, with a focus on sharing and modeling practical classroom approaches extrapolated from current cognitive psychology and neuroscience.

Mr. Wood began his educational career as an English teacher, teaching high school and university level literature and writing classes for 14 years. He then served as the Communication Arts Consultant for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for five years. During his time at DESE, Mr. Wood wrote the state’s Curriculum Frameworks for Communication Arts, led the development of the state’s communication arts assessment, and started the state’s first intensive K-3 professional development model for improving reading instruction (the Missouri Reading Initiative). During his time as a teacher and state educational consultant, Mr. Wood became fascinated with exploring the biological underpinnings of effective teaching and learning. A Great How-To for Teachers Willing to Stretch

This is the perfect research-based guide for a teacher intrigued by the potential of music in his/her classroom but clueless as to how to pursue it. Allen and Wood are detailed and specific in laying out strategy after strategy for how and why to use music, K-12, with chapters on "Music to Work To," music for "Calming the Restless Natives," "Using Pump-Up Music to Energize Students," and more. They also provide long lists of titles of recordings from the full range of pop genres (R&R, hip hop, country, etc.) as well as a smattering of classical titles (Would there were more of these!). In the appendices there are lists of "Songs That Match Classroom Activities": e.g., "Color Songs," "Name Songs," "Movement Songs," etc. And should a teacher need the strength of research to convince her/his administrator that this music thing is not just a frill, the authors provide ample references and notes to support their claims of music's efficacy in enhancing classroom teaching and learning.

Good teachers play music in their classroom;Great teachers utilize it

I have always used music in my classroom to set the mood but The Rock 'n' Roll Classroom helped me to realize how much more it could do. Signaling transitions, timing events, and controlling student energy and focus are tasks I had to deal with every day. I worked hard, too hard, with my words and own energy to do them successfully. This book helped me figure out how to let the music do the work for me. By selecting the right songs to signal our routines my whole classroom management system became easier and more enjoyable. I am no longer clapping, flashing lights or raising my voice to gain attention. Students are happier; I am happier. Now at the end of the day my kids aren't the only ones left with energy!

William Shakespeare may have been referring to romantic love, but those of us who have ever participated in any activity accompanied by music can tell you that music has a way to touch us, inspire us, revive us, and pep us up! To feel happy and passionate about the task at hand.
The Rock n Roll Classroom is a dynamic, interactive and refreshing approach to bringing learning, creative thinking, and movement into the classroom. Students, and teachers, need to feel free to combine academics and multiple ways of learning and enjoyment in the process. Neuroscience research has proven that music stimulates various parts of the brain at once - visual cortex, neurons, motor cortex and cerebellum - just to name a few. Much research has linked music to happiness. Rhythm and movement stimulate learning and activate a higher level of processing. Consider watching early childhood students learning Itsy Bitsy Spider complete with hand movements. How much more quickly they learn the words - and how much more enjoyable is the learning for all involved? Where does it say that this must stop when we get older? Join me and so many others in exploring The Rock n Roll Classroom and instituting smiles, learning, laughter, deeper meaning, and FUN in learning. With that being said, I ask you: what would be wrong with all that brain activity and happiness in the classroom? Loving learning? I think Shakespeare would emphatically say, `Play on!'

In "Burt Osborne Rules the World," a precocious boy ponders his childhood in "a world protected against anything you could imagine doing to make it more interesting." Sensing that only more of the same awaits him as an adult, Burt charts a different course--as a class clown with a truly toxic sense of mischief. Others, like Lydia in "Ralph Goes to Mexico," assert their individuality more effortlessly, for they're just too naturally odd to be cowed by convention. Lydia's dilemma is whether she should have her leukemic cat stuffed and mounted or turned into a hat after he dies.

These lyrical tales celebrate the ordinary--and the not so ordinary--with a flourish of Nabokovian wit that combines grandeur, kitsch, and the author's broad empathy with his characters.

The Bubble of Memory

A sad undercurrent meanders throughout Ed Allen's collection of short stories, "Ate It Anyway." The Flannery O'Connor award-winning volume for short fiction focuses on middle-class America and its failed quest for a meaningful and lasting happiness. The characters usually speak about their inner lives in a confessional-style prose. Often the protagonist will reminisce about a past that seemed so much better than it truly was.

The opening short story, "River of Toys," encloses a revealing thought, "A neighborhood is whatever anyone wants to remember about it." What makes the characters poignant is their self-knowledge of drowning in the mire of an average life they abhor. The notion is most striking in "Burt Osborne Rules the World." The short story's title soon becomes apparently oxymoronic as the character of the title's name laments, "I could have done a better job of being Burt Osborne." He peaks during sixth grade, the height of his unique individuality, and then dives headlong into mediocrity.

In short, Allen covers the terrain of an unfulfilled life like a consummate foreign correspondent. Memory turns out to be an ever-increasing bubble that holds characters within its isolated limited world of the past while pushing out the possibilities of living in the present and having any hope of a joyous future.

About the Author
EDWARD C. SELLNER is associate professor of pastoral theology and spirituality at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota, and has worked as a chemical dependency counselor and consultant, including five years with Hazelden in Minnesota. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame and is the author of numerous journal articles on spirituality and recovery from chemical dependency. His books include Christian Ministry and the Fifth Step, and The Fifth Step: A Guide to Reconciliation.

Worth the Read

A mentor is (usually) an older and more experienced person who shares information with another person and often serves as an advocate for that person. Most mentoring is rather informal and unstructured. This may be one reason the process is often hard to define or identify.

Edward Sellner makes an attempt in this direction with Mentoring: The Ministry of Spiritual Kinship. Sellner is a professor of pastoral theology and spirituality with a background as a chemical dependency counselor. This unusual combination provides some fresh insights to the practice of mentoring.

In this book, Sellner approaches the spiritual type of mentorship from several different perspectives. He draws on the spiritual practices of the desert fathers, Celtic spirituality, developmental psychology, Jungian dream therapy, and the life of C. S. Lewis to illustrate the varied ways in which one might serve as a spiritual mentor. This does not work in every instance, but the writer’s attempt shows the richness of the tradition.

Two chapters were especially helpful to me. In his discussion of C. S. Lewis, he provides a unique perspective on Lewis that shows not only how he mentored one of his students but how the Oxford professor grew spiritually in the process. Sellner’s brief recounting of the role of the Irish anamchara or soul friend explains how this relationship made a significant contribution to Christian spirituality, making a link between soul friend and mentor that was new to me.

Sellner has used his experience, education, and imagination to bring new dimensions to the role of mentor. This is an interesting read.
